Flourish.Banner.Frame my new art resource book.
I spent many late nights and long hours over the span of a year to create my new design resource book titled Flourish.Banner.Frame.
This publication is an exhaustive archive of ornaments, borders, banners, flourishes, frames etc. all hand drawn and precision built in vector form. The entire collection of design devices come in at over 600 ornaments all on DVD.
Like my other two books Crumble.Crackle.Burn and Drip.Dot.Swirl, this book will feature numerous profiles of some our industries top creative talents showing how they utilized the art in this book for your own creative pursuits whether in context of design, illustration or craft.
And Flourish.Banner.Frame. is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com
An assortment of motifs from the book.
Decoration has its place firmly rooted in history, be it Egyptian artifacts that show a foliage ornament geometrically arranged within a frieze, Assyrian lotus ornament gracing parts of an ancient throne, Greek plates displaying patterned borders, Roman columns with Corinthian capitals, the illuminated manuscript printed in the Gutenberg Bible, or the beautiful decorative tapestries of William Morris.
Another assortment of motifs from the book..
It’s obvious that history is replete with mankind’s fascination regarding all things decorative. Creative-minded people enjoy using beautifully decorative elements within their work and rightly so. But our challenge is to balance the use of ornaments appropriately within our work, because design is more than decoration.
The diverse range of graphic ornaments in Flourish.Banner.Frame provides any designer with an arsenal of creative options as to how they can put them to use within the context of their own projects.
Tin box packaging designed by Vincent Morales.
Knowing this book would be released in 2011, I provided several designers with access to the books ornament art ahead of it’s release. My friend Vincent Morales an art director at Topps™ in New York used three of my ornaments to design the packaging for an NFL licensed product shown above.
The three ornaments used.
In the tin box packaging Vincent used a tribal flair, a corner treatment, and a border ornament in his packaging design for NFL football cards.
Example ornament usage.
When I create the artwork in all of my design resource books, I have the end user in mind. Like great photography, well crafted graphics in the hands of talented designers make creating beautiful solutions a lot more attainable and compelling. Out of the three resource books I’ve authored for HOW Books I’m most proud of Flourish.Banner.Frame.
So much can be done with these ornaments and I look forward to seeing how other designers leverage these unique motifs in their own work moving forward.
Bonus content sheet.
In addition to the 600+ ornaments I created for the book, I also created an entire set of 65 bonus ornaments as well for anyone who orders or pre-orders my new book.
