Really Weird


My favorite drawing pen.

For nearly 20 years now I’ve been drawing using a PaperMate Flair pen. I find it kind of strange how I can get so attached, familiar, comfortable with an inanimate object. I suppose it has a lot to do with the fact that it’s so closely tied to my creative expression and passion to create?

At any given time you can find a bunch of these pens scattered through out my work area. Each one at various stages of use. Newer juicy ones to fill in bigger black areas, older ones barely bleeding ink that work well for drawing smaller details. I usually hold on to all of them until they give up the creative ghost and completely go bone dry.

I used a PaperMate Flair pen to do the majority of the creative heavy lifting on my most recent project, a poster design for Neenah Paper that I’ll be signing and giving away at the HOW Design Conference in Boston.

It’s illustrated using the same super doodle style I’ve worked in before. And this post will shed some light on how i went about creating the artwork.

The Method to my Madness

Vector Basic Training Workshop: Salem, Oregon


Vector Basic Training Workshops.

The Vector Basic Training (VBT) one day workshop is a live three hour event that takes the attender through a systematic creative process that reinforces drawing, and demonstrates how to precisely build your drawn design in vector form through simple vector build methods.

My goal is to help demystify the often frustrating process of creating vector graphics, so you can leave the event better equipped to produce well-crafted vector artwork for your own design projects.

Attenders can bring their own laptops and follow along using the vector resource files I’ll provide to those who sign up to attend, or they can just watch the presentation. Either way you’ll learn a lot. Attender questions are welcomed during the live event and every paid attender will receive a discount code good for 35% off my book Vector Basic Training.

Who is This Workshop For?
The methods I cover in this workshop will apply to graphic designers, web developers, illustrators, Interactive designers or anyone who needs to create original vector graphics using drawing programs like Adobe Illustrator, FreeHand, CorelDraw or even InkScape for their own projects.

Continuous Line Illustration


Linear line set of faces.

Drawing continuous line artwork is a lot of fun. I approached Tuts+ Premium and suggested they hire me to create a set of stock linear line illustrations for members of Tuts+ Premium. They agreed.

I thought a whole set of faces would be a nice pedestrian theme that a lot of people could use for a variety of project types.
