SXSW Talk

I’m really excited to be be speaking at SXSW this year.

I’ll be doing my “Drawing Conclusions” presentation I originally created for the HOW Design Conference.

SXSW is the largest event I’ve ever spoken at. And this last week I did my first media interview about my talk and have a few more lined up once I get to Austin.

But what I look forward too the most will be the BBQ. Yum!

Creative Habit

Sasquatch cardboard doodle.

I’ve been on this cardboard doodle kick for about a month now. It’s been a fun creative habit.

Today I decided to draw a Sasquatch and posted my initial one via my instagram account. Someone asked if they could buy it so I agreed and it’ll be shipped out in the next day or so to a new home.

I was kind of bummed though, I like these funky pieces of art so I decided to draw another one for myself which you can see in the image above.

Cardboard Doodles

Doodle tools needed.

I’ve never been able to draw in a sketchbook, I just find it too confining for my creative tastes. I prefer drawing in notepads, the kind you can simply tear out a sheet guilt-free and tack to a wall or place inside a project folder etc. Because I use notepads I’m left with a thin cardboard backing once I draw through all the pages.

I’ve always thought it was a waste to just toss these cardboard sheets away so I started saving them. I wasn’t exactly sure what I’d end up doing with them but so far they’ve led to what I call cardboard doodles. It’s more like a creative exercise for me and a good excuse to draw. I also like the fact the cardboard isn’t being tossed in the trash and becomes fun art.

All you need to do you own cardboard doodle is shown in the photo above. And this post shows how I created my most recent cardboard doodle “Angelic Pooch.”

Design Sensibilities

Sinfully ugly logo.

The most intriguing projects for me are those that challenge me to think differently, or cause me to approach something in a new way. Rarely are projects so smooth as to avoid any bumps in the creative road, some times that happens, but most often the creative process between client and designer can get a bit messy along the way. So knowing how to steer the proverbial ship through the waters of client expectations and personal preferences is paramount in pursuit of resolving a design problem.

In this post I’ll reveal some interesting aspects that transpired during the course of a recent project.

Making a Lynda.com Course

The making of a Lynda.com design course.

Over the last six years I’ve authored four books. That said there’s no John Grisham’s in design publishing and the investment of time to produce a well crafted content rich book is a lot of hard work.

So when I was asked to do another book this past year I told the publisher I had to think about it. I just wasn’t sure I wanted to go through the hassle that comes with this enormous task. If I don’t love doing something the last thing I want to do is commit to it.

A few days later I got a call from my friend Mordy Golding who now works at Lynda.com and he asked me if I’d create a course for them on design. The more I thought about this, the more I realized this format for delivering information is better suited for me than a book is. The whole medium of interacting with an audience and talking to them is far more appealing than putting my thoughts and images on paper and sticking it on a shelf. So I turned down the book offer and agreed to create courses for Lynda.com.

A few weeks back I flew down to Lynda.com headquarters and we spent nine days shooting the entire course. The whole experience was a lot of fun and this post will give you a good idea as to what it takes to produce this type of video content.

So what’s my design course going to be about you may ask? Well I can’t get too specific but in general it’s about the creative process. From initial client contact, gathering information, ideation, sketching, refining, building out your art digitally, presentation, revisions, art direction and everything else in between.

This post is a sneak peek behind the creative scenes at Lynda.com.

Texturizing

Live free.

Last weekend my daughter Savannah and I spent Saturday morning texture exploring. Driving around the country side and downtown finding old buildings and facades and capturing the real-world textures digitally. It’s a fun way to explore and discover things all the while building a design resource you can use.

I’ve been texture exploring since art school back in 1985. I even wrote a book about textures called Crumble.Crackle.Burn, but the main reason I love textures is because they are timeless. They’ll never go out of style and it’s an authentic way to take digital art and bring some humanity into it.
