Hawaiian state of mind doodle.
It’s been four years since my family has been able to take a nice long vacation together. But this month we were able to spend ten days in Kaanapali, Maui. I’d never been to Hawaii before so we spent our time sitting on the beach, body boarding, snorkeling, swimming, Hawaiian Luau, Zip Lining, and consuming tropical cocktails. It was relaxing and fun.
The whole laid back vibe of the island and all the tropical fish and colorful plants and culture inspired me. Since the whole experience made me happy I found myself doodling the above art thinking about it. The word “Happy” in Hawaiian is “Hau’oli” so I decided to create it as a way to document our trip and reflect the Hau’oli experience we had there.

Hand Lettering
This post is a brief behind the scenes look at a recent custom typography project I posted on my Glitschka Studios web site.
Loose Sketching
When I start working out my hand lettering I like to use a standard pencil. I hold it with two three fingers loosely and lightly gesture draw which allows me to flow the letterforms better. I then go in and roughly work out the basic composition. I don’t worry about letter weights at this stage.
