Hand Lettering

My loose sketch.

This post is a brief behind the scenes look at a recent custom typography project I posted on my Glitschka Studios web site.

Loose Sketching
When I start working out my hand lettering I like to use a standard pencil. I hold it with two three fingers loosely and lightly gesture draw which allows me to flow the letterforms better. I then go in and roughly work out the basic composition. I don’t worry about letter weights at this stage.

Hau’oli

Hawaiian state of mind doodle.

It’s been four years since my family has been able to take a nice long vacation together. But this month we were able to spend ten days in Kaanapali, Maui. I’d never been to Hawaii before so we spent our time sitting on the beach, body boarding, snorkeling, swimming, Hawaiian Luau, Zip Lining, and consuming tropical cocktails. It was relaxing and fun.

The whole laid back vibe of the island and all the tropical fish and colorful plants and culture inspired me. Since the whole experience made me happy I found myself doodling the above art thinking about it. The word “Happy” in Hawaiian is “Hau’oli” so I decided to create it as a way to document our trip and reflect the Hau’oli experience we had there.

Drawing Conclusions

Animated graphic from my title screen of my talk.

Later this month I’ll be giving a talk at the HOW Design Conference titled “Drawing Conclusions.” Over the past six months I’ve been doing passive research, interviews and a lot of thinking producing my presentation. I’ve been writing and just finished building the actual keynote file over the last two weeks and have spent many hours drawing out a lot of it’s graphic content since it’s a talk about drawing.

In this post I’m going to share four simple points pulled from my talk and the drawings I created for each of the slides associated with them.

Draw Happy

“Draw Happy” Doodle in progress.

This weekend I worked on my HOW Design Conference presentation which will be titled “Drawing Conclusions.” Researching, interviewing, and producing my talk meant I also found myself doodling a lot too.

Some of my titling in my presentation will be hand drawn and while I had my pen warmed up I took a few minutes and created the design shown in this post.

Really Weird

My favorite drawing pen.

For nearly 20 years now I’ve been drawing using a PaperMate Flair pen. I find it kind of strange how I can get so attached, familiar, comfortable with an inanimate object. I suppose it has a lot to do with the fact that it’s so closely tied to my creative expression and passion to create?

At any given time you can find a bunch of these pens scattered through out my work area. Each one at various stages of use. Newer juicy ones to fill in bigger black areas, older ones barely bleeding ink that work well for drawing smaller details. I usually hold on to all of them until they give up the creative ghost and completely go bone dry.

I used a PaperMate Flair pen to do the majority of the creative heavy lifting on my most recent project, a poster design for Neenah Paper that I’ll be signing and giving away at the HOW Design Conference in Boston.

It’s illustrated using the same super doodle style I’ve worked in before. And this post will shed some light on how i went about creating the artwork.

The Method to my Madness

Crude thumbnail sketch.

After posting a new project last week on my Glitschka Studios website I’ve been asked how I went about creating the artwork. I should point out that a full disclosure of my process can easily be found via my book Vector Basic Training or through my tutorials at IllustrationClass.com.

I’ve decided to quickly review the method to my madness in this post. It’s one that I use for nearly all my creative projects whether it’s a logo design, illustration, diagram, iconography etc.
