I’ve illustrated a lot of different things over the last 20 years or so but never Santa Claus? (At least none that I can remember) I’ve done elves and even Jack Frost but never the guy from the North Pole?
I love Christmas and all it truly stands for. I know the character Santa is more a part of the commercial side of the season but hey, I grew up watching all those cheesy stop frame animations each year and loved them. Land of misfit toys and all the other fun memorable characters and stories. So I decided to finally create the fat man himself this year.
The making of a Lynda.com design course.
Over the last six years I’ve authored four books. That said there’s no John Grisham’s in design publishing and the investment of time to produce a well crafted content rich book is a lot of hard work.
So when I was asked to do another book this past year I told the publisher I had to think about it. I just wasn’t sure I wanted to go through the hassle that comes with this enormous task. If I don’t love doing something the last thing I want to do is commit to it.
A few days later I got a call from my friend Mordy Golding who now works at Lynda.com and he asked me if I’d create a course for them on design. The more I thought about this, the more I realized this format for delivering information is better suited for me than a book is. The whole medium of interacting with an audience and talking to them is far more appealing than putting my thoughts and images on paper and sticking it on a shelf. So I turned down the book offer and agreed to create courses for Lynda.com.
A few weeks back I flew down to Lynda.com headquarters and we spent nine days shooting the entire course. The whole experience was a lot of fun and this post will give you a good idea as to what it takes to produce this type of video content.
So what’s my design course going to be about you may ask? Well I can’t get too specific but in general it’s about the creative process. From initial client contact, gathering information, ideation, sketching, refining, building out your art digitally, presentation, revisions, art direction and everything else in between.

Awesome Possum design.
I love modern nomenclature and how people create and use certain terms or phrases. I know I’ve been inspired by creative terminology I’ve heard. One favorite phrase of mine I use when excited about something is “Awesome Possum.”
Not really sure how or when I started using the phrase “Awesome Possum,” but I’ve been saying it for years. Another one I’ve been using since I first watched Seinfield back in the mid early 90′s is “Giddy Up!” (View it here) That was a phrase Kramer would say that always cracked me up and after a while I caught myself saying it and it’s just stuck with me ever since.
I decided to turn this favorite saying of mine into a t-shirt and stickers.

My David and Goliath concept sketch.
A lot of work I do for other agencies and firms falls within the realm of exploratory work. They hire me to explore creative possibilities to help them find an appropriate solution for their clients and many times it never leaves the realm of pencil sketches. Such was the case with this project. I was asked by an ad agency whose client was a Christian publisher, they wanted to see my take on the Bible characters David and Goliath.
The above sketch is what I provided to the ad agency. I also sketched out a King Saul and a few other things not shown in this blog post but the project never went past the exploratory stage so I filed my sketches away invoiced the work and moved on to another project. I’ve had this specific sketch pinned to my bulletin board for well over a year now wanting to return to it and flesh out the final illustration just for fun, but never seemed to have the time. I was determined to do it this summer so over the last couple of months whenever I had a few spare minutes in my schedule I’d open it up and continue slowly working on the art and finally finished it up last night.
Street Poster
A friend of mine is a member of a local roller derby team called the “Hub City Lady Hawks” and asked me to create a poster for an event they’re having. It’s been a long time since I cranked out a street poster like this. But who could say no to an event with a bunch of ladies force feeding elbows to each other while skating in circles all for a great cause?
