Folder of Lost Ideas

BOSS Ad exploration.

I love teaming up with other agencies to pitch concepts and campaigns for their clients to consider. The only draw back on this type of work is the vast majority of it never sees the light of day because it’s never used.

A while back I did three pencil explorations for Reign an advertising agency who was developing an ad campaign for BOSS. I thought the general concept of using the linear style with the cables was a clever way to showcase how their products were interacted with by the target audience.

Unfortunately BOSS went in a completely different direction and my sketches were archived into another folder of lost ideas. Well this creative modus operandi kind of bums me out at times, so I decided to take one of the pencil sketches and flesh it out into a more final form.

So if you’re some marketing person who works for a company that makes headphones, manufactures cables for audio or video components, or provides yarn for the crafting industry I have a perfect approach for your marketing efforts that needs a good home.

Borrowing my Brain

Uncensored Coffee Logo.

A large majority of the work I do is on behalf of other design firms or ad agencies. They hire me to execute design projects for them, and many of these projects are logo identity or brand development explorations. In a nutshell you could say they pay to borrow my brain.

You Can’t Tame a Dragon

DragonFrame logo design and badge graphic.

When I’m hired to create logo / brand identity concepts I provide a broad range of explorations for the agencies I work with. They in turn take the directions I’ve developed and use them in their own presentations to their client.

The creative process can be exhaustive as we dial in appropriate designs based on the clients audience and marketing strategy. But no matter how well a creative process is formulated and executed, in the end the client can still choose to be flaky and decide not to use anything you’ve created.

It’s a Jungle Out There

Jungle foliage direction.

Not every project I’m hired to do exploratory work on ends up meeting the expectations of the art director or creative director I’m working with. I do my best to provide directions appropriate for their needs and on target with the direction they provide me, but the design process can still be very subjective, even more so when you have multiple creative chefs in the proverbial kitchen.

For this word mark I was hired to do hand lettering explorations. I presented a wide range of directions, but in the end they didn’t go with any of them.

Brand Logos 1

Philip Morris International, and Bravo Verde Sportswear.

A high percentage of my work is on behalf of larger agencies and design firms who hire me to create on their behalf for their own clients needs. Many of their clients are multi-national corporations like Philip Morris whose brand equity is well over a 100 years old and in serious need of a re-fresh.

Other small business and start up clients of my own also need help establishing a brand presence with their identity. Regardless of which end client I’m designing for, my approach and design dedication is the same. That said not all my designs are used, and the designs shown in this post represent a handful that fall into a category I call “Lost Ideas.”
